Qingdao Morimaki Mayflower Model has adopted 3D printing technology for the first time, which has significantly improved the efficiency of ship model testing and verification.

Qingdao Morimu Mayflower Model Shipbuilding said on May 24 that the company has successfully produced a 10-meter test Twin Skeg model in ABS plastic composite material in cooperation with a global 3D printing professional enterprise. This is the first successful case in the shipbuilding industry where 3D printing technology FDM (Fused Deposition Molding) has been used to create a model ship made of non-wood materials.

According to Qingdao Morimu Mayflower Model Shipbuilding, shipbuilders will make scaled-down model ships in order to build new ships, and test and verify the ship's movement, speed, propulsion power and other navigational performance in large pools in advance. Previously, most of the model ships used for such model tests are made of wood, and only the production of model ships requires about 3 weeks. And if 3D printing technology is used, the production time of the model ship can be shortened by up to 40%, and it can also respond quickly and flexibly to the test requirements put forward by the shipowner temporarily. If an unmanned automation system is utilized, it will be of great help in improving production efficiency and reducing costs. In addition, the waterproof performance of the model ship made of ABS plastic composite material has been improved, and some of the materials of the model ship can be recycled and reused after the completion of the test, which has an environmental advantage.

According to Qingdao Morimaki Mayflower Model Shipbuilding, the successful production of the model ship using 3D printing technology is the result of the company's R&D center in Shixing, Gyeonggi-do, which has cutting-edge research facilities such as towing pools and integrated pools, and has integrated the R&D results and experience related to the vibration of a wide range of ship structures that have been accumulated in the past.
