Constitution Wooden Boat Ship Model-Mayflower Model Making

With the first ships built thousands of years ago, technology and innovation have been key factors in how ships have changed over the years.

A look at history books shows that the earliest known boats date back to around 2500 BC. Measuring 143 feet (44m) long and 20 feet (6m) wide, the Egyptians managed to build wooden boats capable of navigating the oceans.

Viking longboats like the Skuldelev 1 follow suit and are designed to accommodate up to 60 oarsmen to help row the boat. The long, narrow design allows them to be used in both the open ocean and rivers.

Over time, the size of these ships began to increase and their uses began to change. Ships such as the Santa Maria (which brought Christopher Columbus to the New World), the Victoria, and the Mayflower were used for exploration, transportation of goods, and eventually for combat.

In the next chapter of the history books we have things like HMS Victory and USS Constitution. They were about 60 meters long and were two of the largest wooden warships built.

Technological innovations play an important role in the next phase of maritime history. Starting with steamships combining wind and steam and propellers such as the SS Sultana, ships became larger and were able to transport more cargo as people allowed international trade to increase.

Launched in 1912, the fate of the Titanic is world-famous. In a bid to become a masterpiece that showcased the glory of mankind, the largest and fastest passenger ship of the time hit an iceberg and sank en route to New York.

During both World Wars, ships such as the USS Arizona and the USS Bismarck will go down in history as two of the most famous battleships in history. The ability to meet the needs of over 2,000 crew members and great firepower as a catalyst for their respective nations' victories has allowed these ships to go down in history for their determination and sacrifice.

It seems that with the inevitability of the passage of time comes the inevitability of ships and their increase in size and capacity. The largest ship in the world today (the Prelude FLNG) is a staggering 488 meters long, which in context is longer than the Empire State Building.

Where to go from here? The Freedom Ship was a project proposed in the early 1990s that envisioned a 1,317m (0.818 mile) long integrated city. The complex would continuously circle the globe.
