Xufu Sailing Ship Model-Mayflower Model Making

Mayflower Modeling recently had the pleasure of building a model ship of the RMS Queen Mary for one of London's newest and most luxurious hotels. Last week we uploaded a few photos of the model online and received a lot of responses and interest in the model. Because of this we decided to write this article to let you know more about the project.

History of Boats

For those unfamiliar with RMS Queen Mary, here is a brief overview of her history:

The ship was built in Clydebank, Scotland between 1929 and 1935.

Her maiden voyage took place on May 27, 1936, and since then she has served as a luxury passenger ship.

Between 1939 and 1946, she was converted into a troop ship and used to transport up to 15,000 soldiers across the Atlantic.

After the war, she resumed her status as a luxury passenger liner.

Interest in RMS Queen Mary is rapidly declining as it must compete with increasingly advanced technologies such as commercial flight and the space race.

She was transported to Long Beach, California, where she remains today.

Today, she is a hotel and event venue that receives great attention and many visitors throughout the year.

The hotel showcasing our Queen Mary model is part of the Morgan Hotel Group. The hotel is located at Sea Containers House on London's South Bank and is part of 3 other hotels under the Mondrian brand.

The Mondrian brand is inspired by offering travelers the opportunity to experience another world while walking and staying at a hotel. The brand prides itself on high standards of glamour, luxury, excitement and fantasy, offering clients an authentic experience of whatever story a particular hotel tells.

For its London hotels, Morgan Hotels hired London-based designer Tom Dixon to create a 1920s cruise ship theme. They named it "Transatlantic Liner"; offering travelers the chance to step back in time to the 1920s and put them aboard luxury cruise ships such as the RMS Queen Mary.

Our model is just one of the many design features that help tell this story. Another example is a copper clad wall that runs from the outside of the hotel through the lobby and down to the hotel's riverfront. Designed to look like the hull of a ship, the copper clad wall is truly a spectacle.

Our model

This project was a difficult task and required a lot of work in a very short period of time. The model measures 2.7 meters in length and is very detailed. The model is made of wood, fiberglass, cast metal, galvanized metal and spray paint.

The project only took 6 weeks, which meant we had to stay focused and determined to ensure it was completed on time and to a high standard.

We also made a model of a yellow submarine for a customer. This model can be seen in the photos below. The model is hanging on the bar of the hotel.
