After 12 years, we at Mayflower Modeling have developed an eclectic line of model ships. Despite our wide range and the variety of choices our customers have, sometimes we don't have exactly what they are looking for. In other cases, customers have a specific ship that is special to them in some way; perhaps a family heirloom or treasure chest of cherished memories.

In either case, Mayflower Modeling will provide them with our custom model ship services. We have the ability to build any model ship as long as we can find plans for the actual ship. This service is quite unique and not one offered by other model builders. With over 40 years of experience as model builders, our custom models have gained increasing recognition in recent years for their accuracy and quality. This blog details the process involved in building a custom model boat.

Step 1: Program preparation

We identify the ship, get the plans and scale them accordingly to make sure the model is as accurate as possible. Then we start cutting sections and frames.

Step 2: Skeleton

Just as bones are the cornerstone of any human body; the skeleton of a model is created by cutting and molding and assembling timber sections and frames.

Step 3: Laying Boards

Once the skeleton is constructed, long, flat planks (called planks) are fastened to the skeleton to form the hull.

Step 4: Fiberglass

After completing the hull, the wood is sanded and fiberglass is added where necessary to give the wood a shiny look.

Step 5: Body fillers

Body filler is then added to repair any imperfections in the hull. It is then sanded.

Step 6: Assemble deck structure and details

Then we start adding finer details; such as windows, doors, hatches, winches and cleats. This step is when the accuracy of our model builder really starts to show.

Step 7: Primer and Paint Preparation

Step 8: Painting

Models are painted to the specifications provided by the customer to ensure that the finished product is as detailed and accurate as possible.

Step 9: Completion

Final deck features were added to improve the realism and accuracy of the model.

Step 10: Quality control

The quality control process is ongoing and performed by expert quality controllers throughout the model build. Quality control is facilitated by input from the client, who receives regular photos throughout the build to ensure they are satisfied with the progress.

Step 11: Packaging

Packaging is an extremely important part of the process and is vital to ensuring the happiness of our customers. We carefully pack all our models to ensure they arrive in the best possible condition. Over the years, we have developed a reputation for adhering to high standards of packaging and have delivered to over 90 countries worldwide.
