Constitution Wooden Boat Ship Model-Mayflower Model Making

Just a few weeks ago, we discussed the importance of preserving historic ships and researched organizations that do excellent work to preserve our naval history and culture. We looked at both British and American ships, and in the case of the UK, more specifically, we looked at the USS Cutty Sark. Following our postings and our discussion of the Cutty Sark, the ship was recently the victim of a second fire on October 19th. Having previously suffered significant damage from a fire in 2007, we felt it was appropriate to pay tribute to this beautiful ship.

A Brief History of the Cutty Sark

1869 - The Cutty Sark was built in Clyde, England as a tea clipper. She was responsible for transporting goods, particularly tea, on the trade routes to and from China. Due to the nature of her purpose, she was built to be very fast and was successful at it, becoming one of the fastest fast ships ever built.

1869-1895 - She started out as a tea clipper, sailing to and from China along the trade route. With the opening of the Suez Canal, steamships were able to travel faster to China and the Cutty Sark was no longer a profitable vessel on this trade route. However, she continued to serve as a fast ship for the wool trade to and from Australia. Steamships also began to dominate the trade route and the Cutty Sark eventually became unsuitable as a fast ship.

1895 - Cutty Sark is sold to the Portuguese company Ferreira and Co. and is therefore renamed Ferreira.

1922 - Cutty Sark is purchased by retired Captain Wilfred Dowman, who restores her name and uses her as a training ship from Falmouth, Cornwall.

1938 - The Thames Maritime Training College begins using the Cutty Sark to train cadets.

1954 - She was transferred to a dry dock in Greenwich, London for public display, which is where she is now.

the first fire

In the early hours of May 21, 2007, the Cutty Sark caught fire and burned for several hours before being rescued by the London Fire Brigade. At the time of the fire, she had been off limits to public display for a considerable period of time in order to carry out conservation work.

The damage to the Cutty Sark was considered extensive. Although the fire did not reach her bow or stern, it caused extensive damage to her central structure.

After a lengthy investigation, it was concluded that the fire was caused by an industrial vacuum cleaner left behind the weekend before the fire. Ironically, the efforts to protect the Cutty Sark appear to have led to the fire, which caused much damage. However, as a result of the protection carried out, more than half of the ship's structure, including the timbers, had been removed and was therefore not damaged.

Following extensive fundraising and donations from generous individuals, the Cutty Sark was completely renovated in April 2012 and opened to the public once again.

Second fire

On October 19, 2014, another fire occurred on the Cutty Sark. As a result of the first fire, several safety procedures were put in place to prevent this type of incident from happening again; or if it did happen, it could be contained and resolved immediately. There was no major damage to the Cutty Sark, excluding minor damage to the hull area and damage caused by smoke. It is unclear what caused the fire.

Our model

The importance of preserving HMS Cutty Sark in maintaining British culture cannot be underestimated. This fine vessel represents Britain's presence at sea and its ability to develop fast, reliable and technologically advanced vessels. It is for these reasons that we have decided to honor the Cutty Sark with this article.

Our Cutty Sark models are divided into three ranges, each with different qualities. These ranges include Standard, Premium and Advanced. All models are handcrafted by experienced and skilled modelers; they differ only in the level of detail. Higher levels of detail create more accurate replicas of real ships. Modeling the Cutty Sark for a client is always an enjoyable experience, as the real ship is so beautiful, both in appearance and in her value to naval history and British culture.

Enjoy the pictures of the models we found below and as always, if you learned something from this article, please share.
