We have published details of our model ship restoration work on the 300 year old HMS Albion. This got us thinking not only about historic ship models, but also about how ships have evolved over time. This week, we have a particular focus on warships, with a brief look at some of the models in our collection that represent different eras of history.

Ancient warships

Ancient Rome has always been an area of history that interests me. I spent part of my childhood reading books about the rise of republics and the fall of empires. What fascinated me most was the story of how one city in Italy came to control so much land and so many people, in part through its military might. That's why I was excited when we were able to start offering Mantua Models' Classic Roman Bireme model ship kits. If I had any modeling experience at all, I would consider building this myself!

Royal Navy ships from the 17th to 18th centuries are often some of our most popular ship models. This period of history has many followers, especially in the UK, and some ships have been preserved and immortalized, such as HMS Victory.This popularity has been further cultivated through big screen movies, such as Master and Commander or Pirates of the Caribbean. HMS Northumberland and HMS San Felipe had over 150 guns between them and made their mark on history through various conflicts between England, Spain and France. Photos of the model ships are below:

Modern warships have developed a whole new range of combat tactics. Now, the use of the latest technology has replaced the more historic close quarters combat. Things have not only become more advanced, but also larger, with modern aircraft carriers measuring over 1,000 feet in length and capable of accommodating up to 1,600 crew members. The Bismarck Ship model kit is a replica of an early 1900's warship, ready to be built from scratch for the avid hobbyist.

HMS Argus is an aircraft carrier, also from the early 1900s. This model ship is ready to use for display purposes.
