Building custom models is one of the more unique services offered by Mayflower Modeling. Many of our clients contact us regarding ships to which they may have a personal attachment, or to which a family member or friend has a personal attachment; or a ship that they particularly like and would like to model. We are of course happy to fulfill this request, but making custom models is no easy task. Ensuring that the model is of the highest quality and accuracy involves a very complex and detailed process. Below is a brief overview of the process and how a custom model can go from an inquiry to a beautiful model ship.

The process is divided into four phases; the inquiry phase, the pre-production phase, the production phase, and finally the shipment of the model.

Inquiry stage:

The process must first start with an inquiry to build a specific ship. When a customer contacts us, general information is recorded, such as their details and the specific ship they want to model.

When describing the ship model they want, they will also be asked to clarify any additional features they may wish to include in the model.

Based on the information provided by the client, Mayflower Modeling will create a quote based on the timing and size of the project.

The client will receive a quote and after discussion will hopefully agree on a price. From here, the client will invoice and pay a deposit. Pre-production preparation begins!

Pre-production phase:

This phase begins with Mayflower Modeling, where research is initially conducted and data is collected to help achieve an overall accuracy of the actual ship. This process is usually facilitated by the client who has provided us with the ship plans.

The customer will complete a Model Builder Profile (MMB). The MMB is a form completely unique to Mayflower Modeling and is filled out by the customer to outline specific specifications and features; ensuring that the completed model is an exact replica of the real ship and the customer's needs.

Mayflower Modeling will assist the client in completing this form and after discussion, the client will approve and sign the MMB.

Now that MMB is ready to send to our production team, production can finally begin!

Production phase:

Our model makers started creating models to closely follow MMB.

Throughout the production phase, customers will update videos and photos of their models at certain stages. At each stage, customers are free to add their comments to change something if needed.

Once the client approves the progress of their model, production continues until the next milestone, again sending the client videos and photos to keep them informed of the progress of their model. Once again, the client has the opportunity to raise any concerns and with approval, production of their model can continue. This is repeated at various milestones until the model is complete!

Once completed, the model is put through quality control. This process involves comparing it to the original MMB and ensuring that it meets the client's expectations.

The model is complete and ready to ship!

Transportation of models

Once we know the client is happy with the model (after seeing photos and videos), we contact the client to receive final payment.

The model is shipped to the customer. Below are some examples of the time and care we take when packing our models.

The custom build process is very unique and usually takes about 8 weeks. This is an excellent service that provides customers with the opportunity to own a replica of a specific ship model that may be special to them.
